Established in 1974, Bichitra Inc. has been promoting Bengali culture and heritage in Michigan for the last four decades. With the continuous help and support of the Bengali expatriate community in metro Detroit area, this organization has been conducting cultural and community events.
For the last four decades, the highlight of Bichitra Inc.’s events has been the annual Durga Pujo. In addition to upholding the traditional and religious sentiments associated with Durga Pujo, this three-day fiesta also involves various cultural programs by local artists and renowned artists from India. The celebrations also involve “bhuri bhoj”, “dhaker taal”, “dhunuchi naach” and the “nirbhejal Bangali adda”. This weekend celebration sees the expatriate Bengali community in metro Detroit area from all walks of life come together and uphold the quintessential “sholo aana bangaliyana”. In addition, Bichitra Inc. also celebrates Saraswati Pujo, Bengali New Year, and hosts a picnic and a cricket tournament annually.
Apart from the religious and cultural events, members of Bichitra Inc. also participate in volunteering activities aimed at welfare of various communities. In the recent past Bichitra Inc. members have volunteered at Gleaners, Forgotten Harvest, Habitat for Humanity, Palav, World Medical Relief Organization, Capuchin Soup Kitchen, Knit for Kids, Humble Design, and Michigan Autism Alliance.
